Mary "Penny" Pennock

Pennock Center for Counseling was developed and founded by Mary “Penny ” Pennock in 1983. Penny had a passion and a vision:  take care of others in need and provide them with affordable, professional counseling services. This continues to be our mission. Her generosity has enabled us to grow into a community based counseling center providing a variety of mental health programs. We are thankful for the legacy of care that will allow us to continue this healing ministry into the future.

Over thirty years ago, Penny Pennock, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brighton and beloved school teacher in the community, had the idea of helping people gain emotional and relational wholeness. Penny and Pastor Ray Kersting (the minister at the time) initiated a program to provide counseling for those in need. The Ministry of Care was founded because of Penny’s care for others and desire to demonstrate that God has love for us all.

Mary “Penny” Pennock was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 1, 1915. Penny’s professional life began as a social worker, committed to helping others less fortunate; she later became a school teacher where she touched many young lives in her 14 years with the Brighton 27J School District. Penny was an active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Brighton where she nurtured her faith. Known for her energy and caring, Penny found many ways to help the community. Penny was committed to action when she was aware of a need. She started a hospice organization in Brighton, worked with Meals on Wheels, was a supporter of Almost Home (the homeless shelter) and worked on behalf of the local hospital, Platte Valley Medical Center. In 1982, Penny was named Brighton’s “Citizen of the Year.” Pennock Elementary School was named after Penny after it was built in 2002.

Penny passed away on December 2, 2001, but will always be remembered for her love and generosity. Penny helped others, not for the glory or recognition, but out of her deep sense of caring.

Help Penny’s Vision Continue
