Family therapy is a tool that can help to implement boundaries, increase moments of healthy communication, and respect in the family unit. It is a type of treatment that can help with issues that affect the family’s mental health and functioning. image of family sitting on grass

When can family therapy prove to be beneficial? Family therapy can help when your family has experienced trauma. Examples of traumatic events are the following: natural disasters, death of a loved one, substance/emotional/sexual abuse, divorce and more. Another way family therapy can be effective is to help understand why the family is not communicating effectively and determine what is needed to help facilitate healthy communication.

Family therapy can also help when the family has an imbalance of authority.  Family therapy can give the family awareness of how to help an individual in the family who is affected by mental illness as sometimes without that awareness, members of the family may be acting in ways that maintain or even worsen the aspects of the illness.

Couples therapy can be implemented at any stage of your relationship

How can couples therapy help? Couples therapy can help open a dialogue between you and your partner to discuss issues in the following:  roles in the relationship, beliefs and values, finances, time spent together, children, familial relationships, sex and intimacy, health issues, and external stressors. Couples therapy has been shown to reduce relationship distress and increase relationship satisfaction by helping couples to understand each other, identify relationship issues, improve communication skills, resolve conflicts, strengthen friendship and attachment, and terminate dysfunctional behavior.
